Putting the Tierra In Tierra Encantada – The Earth is Our Home Curriculum Theme
Did you know that Tierra Encantada means “Enchanted Land”? Tierra also means Earth, which perfectly connects to this month’s curriculum theme! Our little explorers are setting off on an adventure to discover the world around them with our curriculum theme, La Tierra es nuestro hogar – The Earth is Our Home! From the tiniest infants reaching for the stars to our Pre-K classrooms exploring the continents and oceans that make up our world, every age group will be engaged in exciting learning experiences. Check out what your little one’s classroom will be up to this month.
Words we’re focusing on:
World – El Mundo
Earth – La Tierra
Winter – El Invierno
Sun – El Sol
Home – El Hogar
Infants: Reaching for the Stars
This month, our little explorers look up to the sky and down to the ground in exciting new ways! They’ll gaze at the sun, clouds, and twinkling stars, reaching, building, and playing games. On the ground, they’ll stack blocks, watch things fall, and discover hidden toys while crawling and exploring textured paths. As winter sets in, they’ll bundle up in cozy hats and mittens, feel the chill, and play with “snow” indoors—all while learning new signs and having lots of sensory fun!
Toddlers: My Home, My Tierra
Our toddler classrooms are embarking on an exciting journey to explore La Tierra! They will begin by learning about the spaces they live in, from their kitchens to their bedrooms, while building their own homes through play. They’ll dive into the wonders of land and water, creating their own mini Earth models and discovering animals that live on land and in water. As they look up at the sky, toddlers will explore the sun, moon, clouds, and stars, learning about day and night. With winter upon us, they’ll also explore seasonal changes and experiment with warm and cold temperatures—all while practicing language skills to express their needs and discoveries.
Preschool: From Earth to the Stars
This month in preschool, we’re exploring our solar system and, most importantly, La Tierra! We’ll learn about the eight planets that make up our solar system and practice counting, sorting, and letter recognition through space-themed activities. We’ll also dive into Earth’s land, air, and water, making our own models and creating Earth art. Preschoolers will study the sun, clouds, and the moon as we explore the sky while practicing friendship skills in cooperative games. Finally, we’ll observe winter’s changes, count stars, and create our own constellations!
Pre-K: Planet Earth and Beyond
Our Pre-K students are embarking on an exciting journey to explore La Tierra and Beyond! We’ll begin by learning about the solar system, the eight planets, and their unique characteristics while practicing identifying 3-D shapes like spheres. Then, we’ll explore La Tierra, creating our own models and discovering what makes our planet remarkable. We’ll also explore the seven continents and five oceans that make up our world while practicing sharing and cooperation. Finally, we’ll observe seasonal changes and explore the wonders of the Earth’s surface!
Keep the Adventure Going at Home
Want to keep the fun going outside the classroom? Get creative with Earth-themed crafts like making a model of the Earth or painting your own planet. Explore nature together, pointing out the sky, clouds, and changing weather. Look for snowflakes, take a walk to feel the winter chill, or even pretend you’re an astronaut on a mission!
