Crear Cristales- Make your own Crystals!
How this uses STEM
Crystals are molecules that connect together depending on the temperature. When you pour in hot water, borax crystals bounce around. As the water cools, they bind together and harden!
Tierra Tips to Engage your Little Helper
- Lots of things can be crystalized with this method! Go on a little scavenger hunt around the house and find toys or decorations that you can use!
Materials
- Borax
- Clear glass or jar
- Pencil
- String or yarn
- Tape
- Any items you’d like to have crystals grow on! We used fake flowers and pipe cleaners, but any items that can hang on the string will work!
Instructions
- Tie your times onto a string.
- Tie the string onto a popsicle stick or pencil.
- Add boiling water to your glass or jar.
- Add and mix in Borax by the spoonful. It’s completely fine for there to be leftover Borax at the bottom of the container!
- Balance the popsicle sticks or pencils on top of the containers with the mixtures.
- Let the experiment sit for 12-24 hours (the longer you wait, the more crystals you’ll see!)
- Take out your hanging items and observe the crystals you’ve grown!
