An Inside Look at the Day of an Infant Teacher

Ms. Veronica has been a teacher with Tierra Encantada since 2017! She works in an infant classroom, and has since she started! It’s her favorite age group, and it’s an important stage of life to help develop with Spanish immersion!

We talked to Ms. Veronica to get an idea of what a typical day looks like for her and the eight adorable infants she cares for. This interview has been translated from Spanish into English. For the Spanish version, scroll down!

7:00 AM: I’m one of the first teachers to come in every morning. Kids of all age groups arrive one by one, and we all meet together in the Infant C classroom. Fortunately for me, that’s the classroom I’ll spend the day in!

8:00 AM: Teachers have been arriving for the past hour, and everyone heads to their specific classroom! In my classroom, we do a bit of clean-up and prepare the kids for breakfast.

8:30 AM: I’m hungry- and so are the infants! Good thing it’s time for breakfast, which today consists of a fruit smoothie and a side of whole grain bread. We also have a puree option for the infants!

9:00 AM: We head over to our indoor gym for playtime! We move infants in our cribs on wheels- it’s really adorable. We use this half hour to help the infants explore the space around them. They crawl around the room and are immersed in different sensory experiences as they look at, feel and play with all of the different toys we have. The infants like to stack blocks, roll balls back and forth, and press down on the soft mats.

9:30 AM: At Tierra Encantada, we have an organic milk option for our infants, and this is one of the times of day we feed those who opted in to having it!

10:00 AM: It’s been a big morning for the little ones, and now it’s time for a well deserved nap! We put on some calming Spanish music and dim the lights as we put the kids in their cribs.

11:00 AM: The infants wake up and we keep them entertained with Spanish songs, games and imitation activities (where we make a specific movement or funny face, and see if the infants will mimic us!) until lunch arrives. I always try to get big smiles out of the infants, it makes me happy to see them happy!

11:15 AM: Lunch rolls in! Today we are having veggie bean soup with a whole grain tortilla on the side- perfect for a winter day! The puree option is also available for the infants- this week’s puree options are Sweet Potato & Pears or Mango Lime Puree.

11:45 AM: Time to change diapers! It might not be the most fun part of the day, but it’s necessary to stay clean and comfortable, and we want the infants to be both!

12:15 PM: We roll back down to the gym! Something I love about this age group is that they are always discovering new things or understanding things in new ways. While we were in the gym in the morning, this time they explore new corners of the room, or notice a different ball rolling across the floor.

1:00PM: Back to the classroom because it’s circle time! We put the infants in their floor seats, and sit in a circle so each infant is able to see what we are doing or showing. We always start with vocabulary practice. While the infants have not usually begun to talk, it is very important that we talk to them. Their brains are absorbing information from a very young age! This month, the curriculum is about the earth and beyond, so we teach the words “moon”, “stars” and “sun- luna, estrellas and sol, in Spanish. We also do an art project- stamping stars on paper with sponges and paint! This works the infants fine motor skills and introduces them to varying textures.

1:45 PM: It’s once again time to change diapers! We wind the room atmosphere down a bit- the music is calmer and we sing along softly- since we’re next putting them down to nap.

2:00 PM: Naptime! The infants have had a busy today so far- we like to keep them stimulated and learning whenever we can- and the busier they’ve been, the better they nap!

3:00 PM: The lights slowly come back on, and we wake up the infants for the rest of the day. It’s snack and milk time, and today we have crackers and hummus!

3:30 PM: Once we’ve all finished our snacks, we change diapers for the last time today! We like to send the infants home happy and clean, to try and help parents out.

4:00 PM: The rest of the day, parents are coming and going, picking up their little ones. We return to our circle as that happens, reading Spanish books like “Nieve” by Carol Thompson (which you can also hear on our blog!) and singing songs while shaking maracas and other infant-friendly instruments.

5:00 PM: I’m heading home, but I’ll be back tomorrow for another fun day in my infant classroom!

7:00 AM: Soy una de las primeras maestras todas las mañanas. Los niños de todas las edades llegan uno por uno y todos nos reunimos en el aula de Infante C. Afortunadamente para mí, esa es la clase en la que pasaré el día.

8:00 AM: ¡Las maestras han estado llegando durante la última hora y todos se dirigen a su salón de clases específico! En mi salón de clases, limpiamos un poco y preparamos a los niños para el desayuno.

8:30 AM: Tengo hambre, ¡y los bebés también! Menos mal que es hora del desayuno, que hoy consiste en un batido de frutas y un pedazo de pan. ¡También tenemos una opción de puré para los bebés!

11:00 AM: Los infantes se despiertan y los mantenemos entretenidos con canciones en español, juegos y actividades de imitación (donde hacemos un movimiento específico o carita divertida, ¡y vemos si los infantes nos imitan!) Hasta que llega el almuerzo. Siempre trato de sacar grandes sonrisas a los bebés, ¡me hace feliz verlos felices!

11:15 AM: ¡Llega el almuerzo! Hoy vamos a comer sopa de frijoles vegetales con una tortilla de grano integral a un lado, ¡perfecta para un día de invierno! La opción de puré también está disponible para los bebés; las opciones de puré de esta semana son Camote y peras o Puré de mango y lima.

11:45 AM: ¡Hora de cambiar pañales! Puede que no sea la parte más divertida del día, pero es necesario mantenerse limpio y cómodo, ¡y queremos que los bebés sean ambos!

12:15 PM: ¡Regresamos al gimnasio! Algo que me encanta de este grupo de edad es que siempre están descubriendo cosas nuevas o entendiendo las cosas de nuevas formas. Mientras estábamos en el gimnasio por la mañana, esta vez explorando nuevos rincones de la habitación o notando una pelota diferente rodando por el suelo.

1:00 PM: ¡Regreso al salón de clases porque es la hora del círculo! 2:00 PM: ¡Hora de la siesta! Los bebés han estado muy ocupados hoy hasta ahora, nos gusta mantenerlos estimulados y aprendiendo siempre que podemos, y cuanto más ocupados han estado, ¡mejor duermen la siesta!

3:00 PM: Las luces se vuelven a encender lentamente y despertamos a los bebés por el resto del día. Es la hora de la merienda y la leche, ¡y hoy tenemos galletas saladas y hummus!

3:30 PM: Una vez que hayamos terminado nuestros bocadillos, ¡cambiamos los pañales por última vez hoy! Nos gusta enviar a los bebés a casa felices y limpios, para tratar de ayudar a los padres.

4:00 PM: El resto del día, los padres van y vienen, recogiendo a sus pequeños. Regresamos a nuestro círculo cuando eso sucede, leyendo libros en español como “Nieve” de Carol Thompson (¡que también puedes escuchar en nuestro blog!) Y cantando canciones mientras sacudes maracas y otros instrumentos para niños.

5:00 PM: Me dirijo a casa, pero volveré mañana para otro día divertido en mi salón de clases para bebés.
